In "Why Is My Mommy Late?" a little girl is excited at the end of the school day, but when she goes outside to meet her mom, she realizes her mom is not there. Instead of getting upset, she begins to imagine all of the reasons her mom might be late. All of her stories include her mother getting a ride on an animal: a turtle, a whale, and a group of monkeys.
The illustrations seem to follow most closely with Folk Art, although there are a few drawings of the little girl that border on anime/cartoon style, which really make her character stand out. The illustrations are bold, contain large shapes and bright colors, and lack perspective. A nice read, but I feel that probably some of the meaning is lost in the translation from Tagalog to show more English. show less

Personal Response:
This is a very good book to read to a child and then discuss with them what we can do when we are scared. The child sets a good example of using her imagination to keep her from getting scared.
Curricular/Programming Connections:
Story time for young children- talk about what we can do when we’re scared.
