Description

This is the story of one woman's journey from amateur painter to botanical artist, told through the sketchbooks and paintings she produced for the Distance Learning Diploma Course run by the Society of Botanical Artists. Packed with advice and tips, this book will serve as a guide and inspiration to anyone wanting to embark on life as a botanical artist. This book is both a showcase of Mary Ann Scott's work and a record of her achievements, including first-hand accounts of the joys and show more challenges she faced as she progressed. It contains work from every assignment she undertook, from her first attempts at drawing a tulip to the triumphant paintings she made for her diploma portfolio. Along the way are delicate floral compositions, juicy fruit and vegetables, botanical dissections, and her adventures out in the field. Margaret Stevens's comments on each assignments are also included, giving an insight into the assessment process and an all-round view of Mary Ann's successes and (very rare) failures. The book ends with a glorious selection of Mary Ann's ongoing work as a botanical artist. show less

(I hadn't finish this book beforoe I had to return it to SPL. Maybe to buy?) This book is a record of the author's distance learning course with the Society of Botanic Artists. In this unique perspective, she walks us through each lesson, her thoughts about it and struggles with it, and, bravely, her scores and instructor comments for each assignment. Margaret Stevens, one of the instructors, also comments on the process and progress. It's encouraging to see Scot's sometimes less than perfect attempts, side by side with quite lovely work! I also enjoyed her descriptions of her relationship with the subject, whether in her garden or at her local farmer's market. (She is in northern Italy.) Scott describes her application of the colors show more she chose. But I wanted to hear more about the rest of the process, in particular the drawing and composition, and she references techniques occasionally with the assumption that the readers know them (which some may, but I did not!). I'd recommend this book to anyone who is learning to be a botanic artist. show less
