The strategist Maj. Gen. Sir Charles Edward Callwell was recalled ['dugout'] from retirement in 1914 to serve as Director of Military Operations. He was removed from this post in January 1916 for perceived failings in the direction of the Dardanelles Campaign, and later served on military missions to Russia and in the Ministry of Munitions.Tags
