A Is for Africa features gorgeous photographs of people and things found in south-eastern Nigeria. Best for children aged five and up, I was struck by the author’s respectful tone and the way her photographs draw us into the atmosphere in the community. Although written in an alphabet book format, one can easily imagine an older child using this book to learn about life in an African village.
A talented photographer, Onyefulu [offers] and incisive, sophisticated view of her homeland's rich heritage.
"This alphabet is based on my own favorite images of the Africa I know," says the author Onyefulu, a member of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria. The beautifully composed color photos are arranged alphabetically by subject. Each letter feature objects or practices representing various facets of African culture. For example, the letter R shows people swimming in the river and says "R is for River. Africans believe many rivers are sacred." This book offers lots of information on African customs and beliefs, with lots of informative pictures and text.
This ABC book about Africa has a lot of interesting facts. This book would be great for children who want to explore the cultures of other countries. The pictures shown in this book help children visualize the different facts being discussed. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think it would make a good book for the exploration of diversity and culture.
This book has wonderful photos! It is a fun way to explore the African culture and the alphabet! I have used this book in class while teaching geography. We have also used it in my 2nd grade classes as a means of comparing and contrasting different alphabet books and cultures.
This book is very informational and I even learned a lot about the culture in Africa after reading this. This book would be a great and easy way to transfer kids into learning a subject related to Africa and each of them could pick a letter to do for an activity. This book would be good for 3rd or 4th graders as they start learning geography and about different continents.
The book is a great was to show a different culture to our students.

I liked it because it brings something different to the classroom.

I would read this book to 2nd-4th graders and then the older children could do a project on different cultures.
