Moral: don't take sweets from strangers, October 22, 2014
This review is from: The Insect God (Hardcover)
Short tale told in verses of 4 lines, each with accompanying b/w very 'dark' illustration.
When little Millicent wanders off, a car draws up and tempts her in:
"From within came a nearly inaudible twittering,
A tiny green face peered out through the glass."
Meanwhile her very Victorian family are alarmed:
"The Frastleys grew sick with apprehension,
Which a heavy tea only served to increase"
Millicent has not been abducted by a wicked man, but by something much worse...
A wonderful read; put me in mind of a (very Gothic) Hilaire Belloc's 'Cautionary Tales'.

darkly delightful
Very Lovecrafian in an understated sort of a way.
Yet another Gorey child comes to a bad end.
