Much like Laurell K. Hamilton, I like the premise of Ms. Leigh's book, but the stories are really grating on my nerves.

Ms. Leigh set up the backstory of how the breeds came to be, mating fever, and how the Breeds reacted once they found their mate.

It was hot and sexy to have that deep attention and sexual desire on one person. But we're on book 26, and my fascination has turned to 'this is borderline rape and kidnapping'.

I had such a strong reaction to a previous Breed book that I all but called it rape. They deliberately used the mating heat against a woman to get information from her. Frankly their tactics are no better than the Council.

I get it, their lives are in constant danger from the Council. If they are taken they will be show more experimented on or used against their mate. However, there isn't enough love or chemical in the world to take that constant smothering and 'protecting you from yourself' BS.

Also, 26 books in and we are no closer to rounding up all Council members, coyotes, traiters, and now even more Breeds in hiding.

Unfortunately I forgot how I felt reading the last book, and bought this one and the most recent.

This was another exciting entrant in Lora Leigh's Breed series. It was sexy and thrilling. I liked the relationship between Diane and Lawe even though I couldn't see at the beginning how they would ever be able to be together. Diane's need to be a warrior was completely opposite Lawe's need to keep his mate safe and protected. There was a lot of emotional pain for both of them as the fought for a way to compromise that would satisfy both of them.

I also liked the way this story fit into the whole of the series. Diane is looking for a way to find out what is going on with her baby niece after she was injected with something by evil scientist Brandenmore in a earlier novel in the series. Diane is trying to track down other people who were show more experimented on too and seem to have survived. However, these people are very well hidden. Also, someone on Diane's team is a traitor who is trying to keep her from her mission.

The story also deals with Gideon who is a rogue breed who is also on the trail of the same people that Diane wants to find. However, he wants at least one of them dead because they prevented him from dying in an early escape attempt from the labs. After he was recaptured and tortured again, he decided to make his life's goal finding that person and having his revenge. It might be just cynical old me but I can see a romance coming when he finds out that she is his mate. It would make for a very high conflict romance.

It was nice to see some of the characters from earlier books in this series making their own appearances in this one too.

This was a very sexy and exciting story and a "must read" for those following the series. I can't wait for the next book to find out what happens next.

I had high hopes for this installment of the Breeds saga. I had thought the mating between Lawe and Diana would be more engaging. I am also getting frustrated with the progress of the subplot which has been running through the last several books. I had hoped we would move forward a bit more on that subject than we did. This was the first breed book I did not read but listened to on an audio book. Maybe that was my problem, I found the narrator only emphisized the whinyness of Diana about "I need a partner not a protector"....if that statement was repeated once it was repeated a 100 times. It got old fast. I expected Diana to be far stronger, more like Harmony and Megan, than as whimpy as she portrayed. No more audio books for this show more series for me. show less
Another attempt by Lora Leigh to do an action-adventure heroine (see "Harmony's Way" for an earlier). The conflict between the couple is that the alpha male Breed just wants to "protect" his mate, rather than seeing her as a co-equal warrior partner. An improvement from some of the more recent entries in the series, but still -- Leigh's skills are not with characterization, worldbuilding, plotting, or writing style; pretty much these books are vehicles for the sex scenes. They're not bad, here.
This was a good one. The back and forth struggle between Lawe and his mate and their need to remain themselves in spite of the mating was entertaining, frustrating and kept me involved in the story throughout. I'm very curious who Rule's mate is he keeps referring to! Also, I want to see what Honor and the others know about how to help Amber.
I liked it very much, but there were some things that left me a little uncomfortable about the relationship between Diane and Lawe. All the pushing he did so that she would accept the mating and then some of his actions towards Diane's plans didn't exactly spoke of somebody who would support his mate a 100 percent. Still, the ending was pretty great.
Well there is a lot of information in this book. We get some background on Lawe and Rule. We get background on Gideon and why he is so determined to find the three that escaped from Brandenmore. I suspect that Fawn is his mate but I have to wonder he will let her survive once he finds her. Gideon has been betrayed so many times and has endured so much I am not sure he will come to grips with a mate. I also suspect that Isabelle Martinez's friend Liza maybe Honor Roberts. I am also intrigued with who Rule's mate is. He obviously knows and hasn't told Lawe yet. Another story to look forward to reading.

I wish that Diane could have bee portrayed with a little less confrontation about being independent and free. I mean she has been around show more long enough to know that the threat to capture a Breed mated pair is still very much alive and well. Yet she just walks out by herself, well she did take one of her men, to meet with someone in an area that has seen quite a bit of Coyote and Council activity. She has to know that she and Gideon aren't the only ones trying to find the three missing research subjects. I mean there is being independent and then there is being dumb about it. Diane and Thor are no match for a group of Breeds. They maybe tough but they don't have the speed or strength and there are only so many shots in any gun.

For all the love that I have for Lawe I am disappointed that he could find a comprise that would have allowed Diane some or most of her independence. There are other Breeds that have taken mates that are warriors themselves. Those Breeds have found a way to allow their mates the freedom that they need while still keeping them from the Council. I was glad that things worked out but it would have been nice to have a little less anxiety over the whole mating thing.

This is a much better book than some of the previous books and definitely an interesting addition to the ongoing plot of the series. It will be interesting to read Stygian's book when it comes out in August.
