Novelette. Much the flavor of The Time Machine, down to our hero falling in love with a native girl but then leaving. I'm sure there are reasons other folks consider this a classic, but I felt that it hammered the themes into me, with artificially old-fashioned language, and a too much ugliness. The ending of the original is pleasantly ambiguous.

I do like the line, as our mountaineer realized he'd fallen unreachably far from his climbing team, "... he was seized with a paroxysm of sobbing laughter."
