Tree is chosen by the Gundersons to go to farm in North Dakota to work on the farm for one year. If things go well, he might be adopted, something he has wanted for a long time.
Tree is forced to leave his brother behind, but promises to send for him.
Mr. Gunderson is a hard man to please and things don't always go right for Tree.
He has many adventures, but finds love and acceptance in the end and a sense of family.
