L'histoire se déroule entre le Congo et Paris. Le narrateur a le projet d'acheminer une voiture d'occasion depuis Paris jusqu'au Congo. A travers le récit chaotique (il faut s'accrocher !) de cette aventure tout aussi chaotique, on découvre qui est le narrateur, personnage trouble, qui semble tantôt introduit auprès des milieux diplomatiques et politiques du Congo, par le biais de son père et d'un passé militaire, et tantôt seul au monde, se débattant pour mener à bien ce projet où il met les mains dans le cambouis et prend des risques importants. Quel but poursuit-il au fond ? Qu'est-ce qui le motive ? Le sait-il lui-même ? Le saurons-nous jamais, lecteurs que nous sommes ?
