I read this in Year 5 and, whilst I don't remember all of it, I do remember that I thought it very sad and that, as a nine/ten year old, I was touched by the story. ( )

This book would be a nice introduction for fourth and fifth graders on how World War II affected children, even those in villages in the mountains of France. The events and characters are believable, and the ending both surprising and expected. ( )

Jo lives in a small French village during the Second World War. After a close encounter with a bear while he is tending the sheep he discovers that the Jewish son-in-law of one of the villagers is smuggling Jewish children over the border to Spain. this is an exciting story with realistic characters that will help give children some idea of what things were like during the war.
