You don't often find a young adult book that is so good. Seamlessly integrates natural history, kayaking skills, archaeology, caving, wildlife biologist job duties into a gripping adventure. With all that Andy has gone through, trying to survive after the wind blows him off course, I really thought the end of the book was finished on p. 155, when he is finally paddling to a place from which he can get home. But wait-- there's more! No end to adventures and mishaps. I do think the last 4 pages were unnecessary, though. Yes, it connects the characters back to their ordinary lives. Yes, it allows the author to celebrate what he hopes will be discovered in the real world. But it was kind of klunky.

My Side of the Mountain, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Hatchet are classical survival books for kids. Wild Man Island is a survival book for a new generation. Like all the books by Hobbs, these high interest books are perfect for reluctant readers. Set on the islands of Alaska, a teenager becomes lost while on a kayak adventure.
It was just too tempting to sneak away from the Alaska kayaking trip to see the spot where his dad died. Andy is on his way back to meet the group when a storm hits. He finds himself stranded on an island with nothing but the clothes on his back. The island is filled with bears, wolves, and a strange man who has been living there for years.
This book is loaded with actions and mystery. It also contains great historic information. I read this book because of the cover and the description on the back.
Interesting adventure story that would appeal to YA boys.
Excellent book, nonstop adventure
