Description
Sir John, the hero in the book, MAC & HIS DOG, SIR JOHN, was (in real life) CANIM HANIM which means in Turkish, "My dear Lady." I got her as a very young puppy when I was stationed in Okinawa with the USO...1963-65. Mac, the sergeant of the USAF Sentry Dog School near Kadena Air Base, believed that no woman knew how to take care of a precious German shepherd. Much against his wishes, I got the shepherd. It was fun to prove him wrong. After Mac found out I did know how to take care of a show more German shepherd, Canim Hanim was invited to join the obedience training for sentry dogs. She proved to be an able student except for her fear of the dark, two-barrel tunnel. He had watched Sir John, the young lean German shepherd, go part way through the two-barrel tunnel & then stop. No urging commands could make the dog move through the tunnel. When all failed, Mac decided to take his willful pup off the training field for a walk around the Air Base on Okinawa. The ending is a delightful surprise, & proves there is really nothing to be afraid of in the dark. "Jo's story gives us characters we can admire: the kind & patient trainer, the beautiful courageous dog. Three cheers for Sir John!"--Anne Warren Smith, Writing teacher & author of young adult novels. Illustrated by Susan J. Moore. Volume discounts available from the publisher. Margaret Jo Roach, P.O.
