Description

When Link joined his best friend, Ethan Wate, on a quest through a mysterious network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, he knew the journey would be dangerous. But returning home to Gatlin, South Carolina was just the beginning...Wounded during a climactic battle, Link discovers that tending his injuries won't be as simple as visiting a doctor and that healing his arm should be the least of his worries. For being bitten by a Supernatural does more than break the show more skin — it changes a person, inside and out, turning Link into someone more and more like the dark creature who injured him. In this never-before-seen short story by New York Times bestselling authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, listeners witness Link's heart-racing transformation. Dream Dark is set before the much-anticipated third Beautiful Creatures novel, Beautiful Chaos, and as a special bonus includes an exclusive sneak peek at the first five chapters.

I tried to imagine how Link would deal with his transformation from human to incubus and was glad to find out that I wouldn't have to imagine anymore. Unfortunately I didn't learn as much as I hoped in Dream Dark, it still seemed like Ethan and the Caster's story, not Link's as much. Although, I guess Link is now a part of the world Ethan finds himself in. Maybe this more was more of an introduction to his new world. It will be interesting to see how things progress or change for Link, especially how he continues to hide his new existence from his overbearing, meddlesome mother.

Lovable quirky Link will now be lovable quirky Linkubus. Yeah!
I enjoyed this novella. Ethan's best friend Link has been one of my favorite characters in this series, so to see how he's handling this dark life, with the help of Macon Ravenwood, was fun. But even more fun were the sneak peek of the first five chapters of Beautiful Chaos. Let the new school year begin!
This story didn't add much to the world of the Casters. It basically follows Links first days as a "Linkubus". It's mildly entertaining, but Link has never been my favorite character.

Spoilers: at the end Link runs into an old enemy and we get a cryptic message. Not much build up to the event and no real plot otherwise. Still, it's fun to be in the Caster world.

Probably the best thing about this story is it has the beginning of book 3 at the end. I couldn't bring myself to read it because I knew it would make it that much harder to wait for book 3!

This was a great story. I liked it more than I like the Beautiful Creatures books. I love that it tells Link's story, and how he changes into an incubus. It did feel that Link's transformation to an incubus was an easy transition for him. He didn't seem to have any real problems. The story moved along briskly, and when it ended, it felt very abrupt. I wanted to keep reading about Link. I know this is a short story, but I still wish it was longer.
Dark Dream --

Short, but well put together. The story of Link but still told by Lena and Ethan, as explained by the POV from the very beginning. Which is a very odd and interesting way to do it, having the story of Link told by someone who isn't there. Once again making the narration and doubled story telling questionable, but beautiful.

The way it lets us get hints Mason and Ridely that the narrator looking back can point the listener/reader to but that people in that scene and moment might have missed entirely.

Book Three Preview --

I didn't read this one because I will be reading the book so soon.
This short had a lot of potential, and I enjoyed knowing what was going on later in the story. It was from the point of view of Link (or the Linkubus) who is one of my favorite characters (along side Amma, and the sisters) so I was reflectively excited about this one. I thought that it was a bit over dramatic in the beginning, but for a between-the-books-filler and a short story I thought it was fairly decent.
