"Words Are Not for Hurting" is an excellent book that illustrates that what we say to other people has an impact on them. It teaches a very simple concept that many adults do not understand either. I feel this book is excellent in teaching social skills, community, responsibility, and kindness. I loved the illustrations as they showed a disabled child in a wheelchair as well as many different cultural groups. They portrayed a very important idea that really needs to be shared with young and old alike in the world we live in.
I really liked this book because I thought that it taught a very important lesson to kids. It teaches them that their words can be hurtful and they need to think about what they say before they say it, and if they happen to say something hurtful they can apologize. I would use this book as a read aloud in a kindergarten or first grade classroom. I would most likely present this book during the beginning of the school year so that the students can see what I would expect from them as far as talking to each other. My MT in my kindergarten class always tells her students to "use their words" and I think this book would align really nicely to teach the students how to use their words. Something else I thought was really interesting was in show more the back of this book there are activities and discussions you can have in the classroom or at home. show less
Author Elizabeth Verdick wrote the book, Words Are Not For Hurting designed this book for children ages 4 to 7, this is a time of growing vocabularies and increasing social interaction with others. The positive message is think before speaking, and choosing not only what to say but how to say it. Words Are Not For Hurting is a good book and worked great in the kindergarden class I read it to.
4yrs.-8yrs.
This book is a good reminder for both parents and children to watch what they say. I think includes many helpful ideas for dealing with anger and temper tantrums.

This book lets children realize mean words might hurt others feelings, teaches them to think before they speak. I like this book because it is colorful and informative. Great for children 4-8 years of age.
Young kids can use helpful books that demostrate proper ways to use words while still working out strong emotions internally.
This book has some big words. I would read this to children ages 2 to 6. It has some very important things in it. It teaches children that you get to choose what to say and how to say it. It says that there are helpful words and gives examples of helpful phrases. It also gives examples of hurtful phrases. It teaches the children things to say after they say negative things that make a person feel bad and makes them feel bad for saying it.
