I enjoyed story three more than this one (the first story), but I suppose the tale must be told in an orderly fashion. It's refreshing to see an author handle women's attitudes toward pioneer life from a truly Christian perspective, and not through 21st century feminism (no woman could possibly be willing to go, all must be miserable at the prospect, etc.). Luttrell contrasts a normative character (Della) with the protagonist to give the perspective depth. It works well.
