This is not normally the genre that I like to read but I had heard such good things about the trilogy that I decided to give it a try. Honestly, I almost quit this first book about 1/3 of the way through--but, due to the urging of a buddy, I plodded on. Jones creates characters that a reader can emphasize with, cheer for, and love. She has the ability to weave a story that is intense and suspenseful. Her erotic scenes would make a virgin blush. BUT, having named all those wonderful qualities about this book I have to say that the repetition of the same sentiments and thoughts over and over and over made this novel tedious. How many times does Jones have to remind me that the Fyne witches have a curse upon them? Oh, and one other show more thing--the replacing vowels with y in many of the names and the use of "creative" spelling to try to invent names made the novel tedious as well. Over all, I'd recommend this book just as a backdrop for the other two, which are much better.

This the first book in a trilogy about the Fyne sisters - all witches. Three hundred years ago a disgruntled lover cursed the family by saying that no Fyne woman would find lasting love. There had seemed to be a few husbands who died by their thirtieth birthday. Sophie's sisters, Isadora and Juliet, have come to accept that they will never find a mate; but Sophie dreams of a green-eyed stanger, and when she meets him her whole life is changed. Kane is a rebel fighter and a wife and child is not part of his life plan. However their daughter is kidnapped and the two of them have to rescue her from the fortress of the despotic ruler.
This is a really good read, it is light and fluffy in parts - and quite gruesome in others. Most of the show more characters are believable. However, there are some really well rounded characters - Emperor Sebestyen is deliciosly cold and heartless and I really admired his wickedness. I know you are suppose to cheer for the goodies - and I did want them to win. But Sebestyen is a very realistic charcter. His mistress, Liane, is another really well developed character - she has resorted to acts of pure wickedness in order to survive. She, however, does have a heart.
I am really looking forwards to reading the remaining two books to see how it all pans out - this book has adventure, love, sex, torture, murder and magic - just about covers it all :) show less

Not at all the light, uncomplicated story I was expecting. There's more jumping among characters than I was anticipating (and not only to the other sisters), but the stories of the secondary characters were fairly robust and added overall enrichment to the tale. While it's an incomplete story (trilogy!) there is an individual thread for this particular installment that was quite satisfying.
4.5 stars
This book was surprisingly good. I really liked Sophie. Though she grew up sheltered, she was able to realize her potential to rescue her daughter. I thought Kane was a pretty good hero and a perfect match for Sophie.
The side story dealing with the war and the emperor was very intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to read the next book in this trilogy.

Yet another enjoyable reccomendation from Amazon. If you enjoy paranormal or fantasy novels with sugar-sweet romance this book will most likely appeal, but not if you're looking for something dark.
The title alone should tell you this book is about a witch and the fact that she is the "sun" witch should give away this is not a dark or truly tragic tale. Built around a curse that keeps the Fyne sisters from falling in love lest their love die an untimely death, the story centers around their need to break the curse. In the focus of this first tale is Sophie the youngest Fyne sister, one of three witches who live in relative seclusion on Fyne Mountain, and the father of her daughter Kane. When their baby daughter is kidnapped they must show more journey across their world to rescue her and along the way their journey reveals several things from their growing love to the identity of Sophie's father. In a secondary plotline we find Kane's long missing sister Lianne, a concubine living with the shut-in Emperor, leading a side story of court intrigue that helps to tie some of the story together.
I enjoyed the story as a whole but felt that oft times things were discovered with no conflict to strengthen the outcome. I was quite excited by the introduction of the character Ryn, whom I found intriguing, but felt like he was shoved into the story at random to prepare readers for the next book and that did not do him justice. The ending didn't quite satisfy me as a reader who likes more closure but knowing there are more tales of the Fyne sisters I will certainly read them and enjoy. If you're looking for a light, fluffy romance in a fantasy setting this book will likely please. show less

Centuries ago a lover cast a curse on the Fyne women. They would lose any love they found, now many of the Fyne women just take a lover in order to have children, that or vow celibacy. This generation of women are the focus of this series.
Sophie has yet to find her power, she finds an injured soldier and heals him, finding herself attracted to him but she keeps him unaware of the reality of her, he thinks she's an apparation. She comes back searching for her to find that she had a child. When that child is kidnapped they have to join together to find her. This closeness makes them examine their feelings for each other.
It is pretty predictable, but I found it an enjoyable read.
