One of the best children's books ever written, and great for adults, too! The illustrations are very beautiful.
This book could not have been any more well-written than this. Phenomenal story of hope, disappointment, mild jealousy and selfishness out of desperation, and finally dreams come true in finding a loving home.
Charlie the pony lives in a shelter for abandoned animals. He is hoping to find a home by Christmas, but his friend Pale Face is preferred and selected as the 'Christmas Pony' by a family. Thanks to the efforts of an attendant, the shelter sells both Charlie and Pale Face for the price of one pony. Both ponies go to the family, but this family is not Charlie's permanent home. The family finds one for him the following show more Spring.
The author has thrown in so many subtle messages ('Charlie knew he should not have nudged Pale Face, and he was sorry', 'Charlie knew he was not the beautiful dappled Pale Face with one blue eye and one brown eye, but he knew he was something special', 'Charlie had a home and was loved after all, even if he was not a Christmas Pony (like Pale Face)'. There are many such messages, well worth reading again!
