This book is a heartwarming story of a sled dog that gets hurt during a very grueling sled race. The team has to leave her behind so they can go on to win. She is supposed to be sent back home, but instead decides she wants to win this race with her team. It is a story about one dog who runs one of the most challenging Alaskin dog sled races by herself just to find her team and help them win.
Beautiful book! The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is heartwarming and fun.

An inspiring story of a dog's courage and determination. Akiak, the lead dog on Mick's sled dog racing team, has never won the Iditarod. She is getting old and this is her last chance. She injures her foot along the way and Mick arranges for her to be sent home. Determined to catch her team and finish the race, Akiak escapes and takes off down the course on her own. She encounters many stuggles and challenges along the way. In the end, she finds Mick and helps lead her team to victory.
This story will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. You will find yourself cheering her on and reading with excitment and anticipation. In the classroom, students will enjoy learning about the intensity of this sport. As an extension show more teachers can provide more information about the sport and the Iditarod race. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for studying map skills. Students can identify the location, path, and distance of this famous race. show less
