A little out of date, understandable as it was published in 2006. The first half of the book is really helpful. Cathy provides a structure you can work off to write your chick lit novel and she answers some of the most common questions first time romance writers have. The second section of the book about publishing houses etc is the part that’s dated. Publishing has changed a lot in the past 10 years. I definitely think an updated version of the book would be of great benefit to aspiring authors.
Interesting, light-hearted, and occasionally informative... this 'how-to' writing book essentially told me what I already knew, though it was nice to hear it directly from someone who'd 'been there, done that'. If anything, the book encouraged me to get out there and find a critique group for my work... and not to be ashamed to write Chick Lit, as it has blossomed into a perfectly legitimate book genre in the past 10-15 years or so. It's not going anywhere, so why NOT write for it?

Ok, I bought this book and then two students from my Writing 12 class borrowed it before I could even read it. It's a fun take on a fun genre of writing--chick lit--that is currently enjoying a surge in popularity. If you love this genre, you'll find this book an easy read with helpful tips.
A quick read. Writer primer: if you don't get the concept of voice, read this next to another how-to-write-a-novel book and note the differences.
