Description
"Digger is a story about a wombat. More specifically, it is a story about a particularly no-nonsense wombat who finds herself stuck on the wrong end of a one-way tunnel in a strange land where nonsense seems to be the specialty. Now with the help of a talking statue of a god, an outcast hyena, a shadow-being of undeterminate origin, and an oracular slug she seeks to find out where she is and how to go about getting back to her Warren"--Publisher's web site.Tags

I ended up reading it online, because my local libraries don't have it in print. I'm in love with this series -- an excellent, grumpy, pragmatic protagonist, wierd adventures, interesting side characters and fantastic art. Vernon has a gift for creating an engaging story. I feel so involved with the characters that they are constantly having other adventures in the back of my head, as I wait eagerly for the next installment.
Seriously endearing. This story of a dead God and a lost wombat is beautiful, amusing and very touching.
Digger (of Unnecessarily Complex Tunnels), our stalwart heroine, steals the show, as a very down to earth, very funny and caring wombat who doesn't usually hold with Gods but is dragged into an adventure through a bit of devious magic. She is an utterly fab character who’s attitude makes it a sheer joy to spend time and bounces off an excellent supporting cast from warrior Hyenas, an orphan demon, Buddhist monks and some seriously cute trolls.
The black & white art is perfect & quickly grows more confident too. I don't need to mention that dialogue is spot on but I have neglected to say the plot is great and there is some lovely show more world building too (love those wombat curses).
Hugely recommended and not just to comic lovers. I think this is an adventure most people will enjoy and you can try online too: http://diggercomic.com/ show less

Graphic novel and web-comic. Digger is a wombat who ends up in very different world, far from home which she handles with gorgeous wombattish pragmatism. The plot is a mix of heroic quest and slightly creepy whimsy, I love the variety of female characters and the humour. The art relies on lots of blacks, has great atmosphere and is good at conveying emotion. [personal profile] maharetr has the first three books and was giving me one every time I finished another assignment. After I finished book three she gave me the webcomic link and I caught up - loved it, will follow the continuing adventures with enthusiasm.

An intriguing tale of a wombat, a Ganesha avatar, a prophetic slug, and a "mostly" dead god unfolds in this lush and beautifully drawn web comic now captured in print. I've enjoyed Ursula Vernon's artwork on various websites like DeviantArts and have been captivated by her tale of Digger, a wombat who suddenly finds herself in a situation beyond her control but which she deals with pragmatically as she tries to find her way home.
I was not expecting a comic about a wombat to be so fantastic!
I discovered her art maybe a decade ago, then discovered after my move this year that I now live in the same small North Carolina town as her. She just won the Hugo. I live in the same town as a Hugo Award!
