1846 The Decline of Rome, by Joseph Vogt translated from the German by Janet Sondheimer (read 22 Apr 1984) This book was published in 1965 and is by a German professor of ancient history. It covers the period from 200 to 524. I found it very erudite and it told me much I did not know. I guess I have had the wrong concept of the barbarian invasions--even after the Vandals, Visigoths, etc., successfully invaded, they were a small minority in the areas they took over. It is really interesting how the world changed in the period involved. The main chapter headings:
The Crisis of the Ancient World in the Third Century
The Monarchy, the Christian Church and Ruling Society in the Fourth Century
The Roman West and the New Peoples in the Fifth show more Century
Cultural Change Reflected in Art
