I thought that this book was very thorough for an athlete who is looking to start training for a triathlon. It breaks the training process down nicely into segments in the beginning, including definitions of each term, for beginners, like me. That was very helpful so I didn't have to go running to my computer very 2 pages to look something up.
It had many graphs and charts to follow with examples of training plans, so that you could easily develop your own. It discussed strength training, giving examples of exercises and instructions on how to complete them. There was a comprehensive section for each specific part of training, that went in depth with the routine that is best to follow, along with many ideas and suggestions.
There were show more many tips included for common questions such as what to do if you get tired running, or cramps while swimming or riding.
I found these very helpful and easy to commit to memory because they were explained well.
There was an extensive section on exercise physiology, while a little confusing to the beginner, I can only imagine it would be very insightful to someone a little more advanced.
I really enjoyed the sections on fitting the triathlon training into a busy schedule, and choosing appropriate footwear and clothing. These are things that a beginner, even to an advanced triathlete can always benefit from.
Overall, I was very impressed with this book, and I am sure it will be opened and used in my house for many years to come. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I found this book to be exceptional! This book jumps right into training in the first chapter, offering goals & strategies for athletes 12 and under through adults! It stresses the importance of making goals & developing your program to fit your needs from females, youth, to beginners. There is an entire chaprter on the benefits of Yoga, which I loved because other books on this topic are not as informative on all your muscles & connective tissues. This alone was a great help, & relief when done before bed & waking up. Chapter four is all about strength training, & offered photos of how to perform each exercise properly & what it was best for in a triathlon. The following chapters offer assessments, drills, pace, & information regarding show more atmospheric conditions & how your body will react! Informative about nutrition & injuries, a total body conditioning guide & a must have for anyone that is interested in triathlons. show less
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.A great guide to training for a USA triathlon. While the introduction indicates that the book provides information for "athletes and coaches of all skill and experience levels", the actual tips and training advice in the book seemed designed for more advanced athletes. The chapters on training offer sample training plans and schedules, with specific workouts and drills for each of the three sports. This section is the one most useful for beginners. Other sections include more advanced information on technique, competitive strategy, and "the triathlon lifestyle".
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. As the only non-athlete in my family, I actually read this to learn more about what my family was doing in all of their training. It looks to be packed with information useful for novice triathletes. Perhaps one day, this book will inspire me to try one as well!
This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.First off let me say that I am new to triathlons. I hope to compete later this season.
This books is broken down into 4 categories: Training, Technique, Competitive Strategy, and Triathlon Lifestyle. It seems to give a broader picture of the sport and how it impact your life (and pocketbook).
It specifically focuses on preparing yourself both physically and mentally for the race though it also has a chapter on gear selection for all budgets.
One thing I really like about this book is that it has lots of authors, each writing on their topic of expertise.
Do to where I am in my training I have found the drills and workouts to be the most helpful. In the future I expect the other sections to benefit me more.
I have found this book to be very show more informative as it gives a great base and overview as I get started in this sport. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is a must have if you are a tri athlete. But also if you are a runner, swimmer, biker or any combination. It is well written and full of useful information. No fluff.
All the information is relevant and it even touched upon practices you can use to improve your tri that you may never have thought of. Yoga being the big one.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!! Without a doubt, the very best written material to help the tri athlete!
Enjoy.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is a comprehensive guide to training and competing in triathlons. It begins by covering the basics of creating a yearly training regime, then describes training strategies and technique drills, it discusses techniques to use prior to and during races, and finally discusses injuries, nutrition, choosing gear, and choosing a coach. Although this book is advertised for triathletes of all levels, it would be most helpful to experienced (or very determined) athletes or for coaches. This is not a book for beginners or for people who just want to train for triathlons simply "for fun" or to get into good shape.
