It helps to know Japanese culture to really appreciate the nuances of this film, but nonetheless most of the comedy is accessible to Westerners. The late director Juzo Itami was famed for his comedic brilliance, although only this film and the better-known A Taxing Woman went on general release in the West. This film is effectively a "noodle western" about a woman who wants to open a noodle shop, and the Stetson-hatted stranger who vows to help her achieve her dream. Studded with skits about Japanese eating culture, it's deservedly regarded as a classic.
