Dr. Lloyd-Jones deftly draws principles from the lives of Old and New Testament characters as well as expounding some of the great prayers of the Bible. Clearly and forcefully, he presents a masterful exposition of the circumstances accompanying revival in the past, why each generation needs it, and how it will come about today. The best book on revival I've ever read. It will bring you to your knees; it will stir your heart; and by God's grace it will open your heart and mind to the possibilities even in our day when men and women seek the face of God and the glory of His presence and the majesty and wonder of Jesus Himself!
If ever the Church of Christ needed to be revived it is now. As the numbers of 'converts' grow; as new and bigger mega-churches are being built all around us; as we pour our money into technology and decor and every other conceivable aid to ministry; as we do all these things it seems little is changing. In spite of all our 'efforts' Christians for the most part are not easily discernable from non-Christians. Holiness is forgotten, worship show more is uninspired (and often idolaterous), prayer is neglected and in spite of all our supposed 'passion' there is little real passion for God Himself. We need a revival, and I don't believe there is a more important book on this subject than this one by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. In Revival it is 1959 (100 years after the 1859 revival) and Lloyd-Jones is preaching a series of sermons. Lloyd-Jones was an intelligent and godly man. But he was also an anointed man who preached with an unction from the Holy Ghost - the reader will sense this immediately.
J.I. Packer writes in the foreword to this book: "I do not think that our age has seen any more powerful or profound treatment of the topic [of revival] than this series of messages given in Westminster Chapel, London..." Packer later asks, "will his meessage be taken to heart more seriously now that it is in print? I think it should be. I wonder if it will be; and I wait to see."
I have read the classic "Why Revival Tarries" and others on this subject - but this one I believe is, as Packer put it, the best treatment of the subject. I wholeheartedly believe the Holy Spirit will use this book to stir your heart and give you a real hunger and thirsting for genuine Biblical revival. It will help you better understand what revival really is and what reason we have to hope that we in our day will experience such seasons of refreshing as we encounter more of the manifest presence of our glorious King!
Please read this book. Along with Owen's "The Glory of Christ" and Andrew Bonar's "Memoirs and Remains of Robert Murray M'Cheyne" this is one of my very favourite books, and I know it will be blessing to you also. show less

Lloyd-Jones preached this series of sermons in 1957-58 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the great revival of 1858. He leads us through many texts of the Bible, explains the context of each verse, and the relevance of each verse to true revival. The first half of the book is dedicated to the habits of man that hinder revival, as was the masterful method of the Doctor.
Once these hindrances are addressed, MLJ gets into what happens in a revival and from that point on, you feel that you must experience these outpourings of the Holy Spirit that the Doctor describes. His amazing expositions of Scripture inspire you to look for other texts in the Bible that represent revival.
One unique teaching of MLJ is that God sends and ends show more revival on His own terms. Once again, he gives all the glory to God, whereas other teachers ONLY talk about what WE need to do for God to send revival. Lloyd-Jones differs from that teaching by explaining that God is sovereign in all things, ESPECIALLY when and where, and for how long, He chooses to bless us with an overwhelming sense of His presence.
Based upon that fact, MLJ always comes back to the fact that we do not have to wait on a massive worldwide revival to experience the love and presence of God. The individual Christian can experience these things, if only we seek the Lord with all of our heart. show less
