Description

"Is my baby in heaven?" This is the most important question a grieving parent can ask. And even if the little one is someone else's child, the issue remains: What happens to children?those unborn, stillborn, or youngsters?when they die? Can you hope to see them again? Can you let go of your fear and guilt? Can God's love soothe a wound so jagged? With scriptural authority and the warmth of a pastor's heart, bestselling author John MacArthur examines the breadth of the entire Bible and show more reveals in this compelling book the Heavenly Father's care for every life. "I have sat by the grave of our daughter and son and wondered out loud if my belief that Hope and Gabriel are in heaven has any solid scriptural support. John MacArthur offers truth from God's Word that puts the doubts of any grieving parent to rest. Safe in the Arms of God reveals that confidence of heaven for the child you love is based on much more than mere sentimentality; it is revealed in the Word of God and reflective of the very heart of God." ?Nancy Guthrie, author of Holding On to Hope. show less

Summary: Every pastor should have a Scripturally reasoned answer for the question concerning the death of infants. That answer should be "in heaven." While in the womb, God knows every child as a person and ordains a plan for their life. In fact, God claims all children as His own and loves them deeply. There is some age of accountability though it is different for everyone and known only by God. It is the time in which a person is morally culpable for their choices and can understand sin and salvation. The Biblical record is clear that children who die before this age do not enter judgment but peace. Their lives are to be preferred to those living in suffering on earth. The deaths of these little ones is a compassion since they now show more spend eternity in joy with God. This is clear: 1) children are born as sinners 2) salvation is the grace of God alone 3) saving grace comes from the cross 4) people are damned by their works. Children cannot believe but have also not committed the sins (especially unbelief) that the Bible pronounces as worthy of hell. God does not judge based on what would have been done but rather on what has actually been done. Children are saved through the grace of God in the cross of Christ. David's response demonstrates this belief. When his baby by Bathsheba died, he immediately ceased his mourning and was comforted which demonstrates his confidence in the eternal place of the child. When Absalom died, he was disconsolate since he knew of the unsaved state of his son. The salvation of young children is a great hope for those who are also saved. We will be gathered with them in heaven one day to build the relationships that we cannot share now. The reason for this is beyond, but that does not mean we are without hope or understanding. God does good in all He does and works in us through every pain. We can minister to those who have experienced such loss with understanding and love.

Pros: This is a simple, direct book addressing an often neglected pain.

Evaluation: This book is very useful to those who have suffered the loss of a child or for those who are providing comfort to those who have lost one. It is Scripturally grounded, confident, clear, and hopeful.
