Don't think that graphic novels are real books? Try getting your kid to read a "real book" about Amelia Earhart and then try this one. Yes, not as full with facts as a classic biography, but enough for my second grade daughter. Excellent graphics too.

Amelia Earhart: Fire in the skies

Amelia Earhart is a famous pilot for being a woman with a big dream to fly around the world. In a world that believes that a woman cannot be capable of such a feat. We watch as we see the point of view of Amelia and her love of adventure and flying to see what she does to get herself in the position to follow her dream.

Bias out the gate. I think this is a 4.5/5 a lot an extra point for it being a comic book. The art is extremely well done and easily eye catching. With each page demanding attention with the color scheme that can keep kids engaged while telling this story. This increased the enjoyment factor for me quite a lot because I was concerned for the character and each page popped with intriguing show more info to follow. This shows great previous insight on her past without feeling forced. Being not only told the information but showed it as well. Which brings a better connection. Message is kind of bland “Follow your dreams no matter who tells you otherwise.” Buy it does get the message across well. Memorability may not be the best. However, I will recognize this book instantly after seeing the first page because the art is that distinct and unique. Giving it great “sticking power” in terms of reading. One other only complaint there may need to give some students about the time period it takes place it to understand some character’s words and actions.

"Amelia Earhart Free in the Skies" is illustrated like a comic book and tells the story of Amelia Earhart and how she came to love flying. This story talks about how and when Amelia became inspired to fly when she was younger, how she got picked to fly across the Atlantic, how she flew from America to Ireland by herself, and some of her activism for women. This story was very interesting to read because I learned more about Amelia Earhart and I really enjoyed the style of the book. I'm not sure if I would read this to my classroom though because of the comic book style. It is very great for individual reading though and I'd definitely recommend this book to students who enjoy comic books and want to learn about Amelia and important show more women in history. show less
This was also a good book about Amelia Earhart. This book went into way more detail about how Amelia started to like flying and then it worked up to her greatest accomplishment, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. This book was written and illustrated like a comic book with word bubbles. I would use this book with older children to give them a deeper understanding of Amelia Earhart and her life.
"Amelia Earhart Free in the Skies" talks about how and when Amelia became inspired to fly when she was younger and what led her expeditions and successes, like flying across the Atlantic. This story was very interesting to read but I did not like the layout. I was not a fan of how this book was written. It is written and illustrated in a comic book style and it did not intrigue me.

The author starts the book on Christmas day when Amelia says she wants to fly a plane. The story is in comic book text-which I am not a fan off. The book takes us on a journey through Amelia's greatest accomplishments one being the first female to fly. She even flew around the world! The reason I am rating this a 2 is because I feel like there was a lot of "extra" text. and the comic style had to much going on for me. It was not a fascinating read and did not keep me locked. The book did a great job with the illustrations.
This isn't your typical biography. It is a biography but written in a comic book form. The kids would enjoy a book like this especially if they love comic books.
