This nonfiction picture book tells the story of Gandhi's life and accomplishments in simple, accessible language. Demi, the author and illustrator, shows great reverence for her subject and his philosophy of nonviolent resistance (inspired by the Bhagavad Gita). We glimpse Gandhi's shy boyhood, his political awakening as a young lawyer in South Africa, and his extraordinary, decades-long efforts to win Indian independence from Great Britain. The book looks at such milestones as the Hartal (strike) Gandhi led in response to the horrific Amritsar massacre; his subsequent incarceration; the Salt March that mobilized hundreds of thousands; the fast that led to greater civil rights for India's lowest caste; the Hindu-Muslim civil war; show more India's peacefully won independence; and finally Gandhi's assassination by a fellow Hindu. The book ends on a hopeful note, with a quote from the Bhagavad Gita promising immortality to those who embrace love as their guiding force.

The book's illustrations are vibrant and otherworldly; the figures look curiously flat but seem to be floating in the ether (and on every page the ether is a different color). It's a unique, appealing style that I don't recall ever seeing before.

The life of Mahatma Gandhi is told with respect and beauty in this picture book by Demi. Demi makes the reader feel like they can relate to this inspirational man by sharing his fears and weaknesses, and telling us how he overcame them. His message of love and peace shines through without seeming dogmatic or preachy. I was reminded of his similarities to Martin Luther King Jr. when reading this book.
This book was very detailed ,yet a simply written biography of Gandhi. The book begins by talking about where Gandhi was from and goes into detail about his family culture, and religion. Personally, I enjoyed reading this book because I did not know many things about gandhi that are mentioned in the biography. For instance, it said that gandhi moved from india and lived in England where he attained his law certification. I also felt like this book was inspirational because it showed me that everyone has a weakness. For instance, Gandhi was extremely shy and awkward which made him despise public speaking. Yet he overcomes his weakness by perseverance ,

With all of the violence that we see in today's society, we must remember Gandhi's philosophy. This quote from him says it all, "From the beginning of time to the end of time, the force of truth and love always wins over violence. With this great force you can bring this world to your feet." Having been a shy person for the majority of his life, Gandhi made an impact on our world that we will never forget. He was a leader who believed in equality, love, peace, and solved all of his problems without using violence. Throughout his lifetime he helped everyone that needed his grace and loved them as if they were his own. Gandhi led many movements preaching the word of non-violence to thousands of people in different villages. He desired for show more his people to overcome hatred with love, in 1947 he succeeded when India finally won its independence. After being shot in the chest, Gandhi's last words are truly inspirational. Although this shooting goes against everything Gandhi believes in, he says, "I forgive you, I love you, I bless you."
This biography did a very good job at relaying the message that Gandhi preached. What I loved about this book is that the author included many quotes from Gandhi himself. In such a brief summary, the author did a great job telling a great majority of Gandhi's story. The illustrator of this book portrayed the Hindu and Indian cultural in the drawings perfectly. The images were very simply done but at the same time had a lot of intricate detail that I think children would enjoy.

I enjoyed this biography of Ghandi over the other Gandhi biography I chose, by Leonard Everett Fisher. This book contained more information in less complicated sentence structures, making it easier to understand. The illustrations are much more colorful as well. This book does a good job at providing impact to the reader that peaceful methods of resolving conflict can be more useful than aggressive ways. Gandhi was a spiritual and happy man, and many people could use to adopt some of his characteristics, he should be a more influential person of history for young children. Sadly, this book did not contain any sources to back up the historical information.
This book summarizes Gandhi’s life from his birth in 1869 to his death in 1948. Gandhi’s story is one of perseverance. He managed to conquer every obstacle that got in his way, often choosing to change his outer appearance to fit in. In this book it will tell how Gandhi came to be the man that everyone knows him to be today. Gandhi counteracted violence with love, and kindness. He began to attract followers through his defiance of imperial rule. Gandhi was a man that fought for peace in the absence of violence, died at the hand of violence. This book is a great for children as a way to encourage peace and unity.
This book is about Mohandas Karamchand Gandi. This book is definitely meant for students who have an understanding of historical events outside of America, and an understanding of Indian culture. The illustrations were magnificent showing so much detail and great attention to cultural styles in the artwork itself. The author starts the book with Gandhi as a child who was actually not very good at school and struggled a lot with being social. Throughout his life journey trying to find himself, Gandhi learns that the real truth to happiness is getting rid of selfish feelings and having as much love and respect for others as your do yourself. Gandhi experiences many cases of racism throughout his life, and soon creates his own sets of show more beliefs, or a religion. He worked as a spokesman for his people against the British who had control over their lands, homes, and people. Gandhi displayed peace, restraint, and patience many times until the problem was resolved and Britain released their grip on India. This book was very informative and definitely was a good experience for me, to learn about a culture outside of my own. I believe the story and pictures would truly captivate a class of students. show less
