This hide-and-seek, rhyming selection follows the search for a speedy seahorse through the astonishing coral reef. This edition includes educational notes at the end with information about seahorses and coral reefs and the creatures that live there. “Then in the cave I saw a glint, and guess who greeted me?” inquires the narrator in the board book Secret Seahorse. Indeed, readers will be delighted to see what greets them as they journey through a coral reef to try and find the titular covert seahorse. The unusual fabric and felt illustrations are cleverly embellished with sequins, buttons, and beads, and stitched together to make an appealing collage-like background for the hidden seahorse. Young readers will enjoy searching for the hidden seahorse and parents will appreciate the many opportunities to point out the various other aquatic creatures that roam the coral reef. Additionally, the rhyming prose will help children with rhyming patterns and predictions. The story also offers older readers an informal opportunity for counting how many of the various sea animals there are hidden around the pages, and they will also be surprised when they discover that they, too, can craft the coral pieced together with fabrics and the jellyfish out of lace with materials they probably have at home. When the reader reaches the end of their journey, the reader will be charmed at what greets them there. Recommended. Ages 1 to preschool. no reviews | add a review
