More Riordan backlog catch-up!

I've been meaning to get to this one for quite a while. This one is a collection of short stories that are all brilliant and different, talking about vastly different character from very different places in the canonical storyline.

We get a harrowing story of Luke, back at the very beginning with the girls, and the haunting prophecy that he denies ever being real (and we all know comes to be and breaks all the hearts with). We get Annabeth & Percy's anniversary, that involves forgetfulness, seaweebrains, Hermes and his snakes and so much more, making me laugh and smile. A Leo Valdez story with the followers of Dionysus, and very important things about treating your "friends," no matter what shape they come show more in, better.

I really only skimmed the Haley-authored story, which was different from the main and is the only reason I left this at 4 stars and not 5.

Background: A collection of short stories that delve into the lives of the characters from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus series. The collection includes a passage from Luke's diary, a Percy Jackson adventure, a tale about Leo at Camp Half Blood, and a debut story from Rick's son Haley, called Son of Magic.

Review: I was laughing so hard in my car while listening to these tales, I was on the edge of my seat at other times, and I loved listening to this collection. I read all of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and loved them, the adventure, suspense, mystery, and characters blew me away; and the shorts about Luke and Percy in The Demigod Diaries, were exactly like I expected. WONDERFUL and show more insightful. You learn more about the characters, in Luke's diary, we hear about him and Talia before they get to Camp Half Blood. In Percy's story, there is insight into what is happening after the fight for Olympus, and the drama to come in the Heroes of Olympus series.

I haven't read the Heroes books yet, but apparently I really need to start, because Leo's story was the one that had be laughing. I am pretty sure the best was a quote about killing everything and having nutmeg...you'll see, it's an LOL moment.

As for Son of Magic, I was in awe of Haley's writing talent. You can tell the differences he has from his father, and I was blow away by his amazing story telling. In this story you learn about why monsters can sense Demi-gods and how they got their power. It was mysterious and suspenseful the whole way through, and you really want to kill the monster causing all the chaos.

Even if you have not read the series, go grab this, the short stories are easy to get through and explain themselves well.

This book had beatiful, interesting stories that fed my hunger for more information about the Percy Jackson world and I loved it!

The Diary of Luke Castellan

I think if I had to rate this story on its own I'd give it 3.5 stars.
I liked learning more about Luke and Thalia's journey and it warmed my heart to see Luke being all nice and protective over Thalia.
And I adored the moment where they met Annabeth and he gave her that knife.
I felt like an overexcited school girl while reading that because I had to try so hard so I wouldn't squeal.

Percy Jackson and the staff of Hermes

This one is a solid 5stars!!!!!
I loved it so much! I missed reading things from Percy's POV because let's face it, no one really can compare to his sarcasm.
The show more Percabeth moments in this story were just too much for my little feels!!
I also love George and Martha so much! they were just amazing!!

Leo Valdez and the quest for Buford
This one was a 4stars!
I love Leo Valdez, and once again his humor just brightened my day!
The quest was so cool and fun and it allowed me to see more of what happened while Percy was fighting Giants with the Romans!
Piper, Leo and Jason had to fight these crazy followers of Mr. D in order to get Bufford back and save the camp from explosion and it was amazing!

Son Of Magic
This one was a 3.5 stars story.
I loved how it talked about things I kept wondering about throughout two series.
The whole "monsters can smell demigods" things, the mist, and what happened to the followers of Koronos!
I was so impressed to know that it was actually written by Mr. Rick's 16 y.o son!
He definitely has a lot of potential to become a great author, probably even better than his father!

All in all these were so much fun to go through!

I love Rick Riordan's writing style and characterization. I have always enjoyed mythology and he does a great job of bring any and all mytholgy to life in a fresh and new way. I find the characters to be engaging and to feel really real. His characters feel fresh and diverse without feeling like he makes them diverse just to have diversity. He does not belabor the point of their diversity it just is a fact of who they are and yet anyone who reads his books can feel included in representation. I love how he weaves the mythology into modern times so you feel like you are learning something as you are being entertained.
A nice collection of short stories in the world of Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus.

The stories in this book cover a long time span, starting from years before The Lightning Thief (The Diary of Luke Castellan), through just after the events of The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes), and finally in between the events of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune (Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford). It also includes a short story by Rick Riordan's son Haley (Son of Magic) that explores many thus-far unanswered questions about the world of Percy Jackson.

Of the stories in this book, "The Diary of Luke Castellan" was probably my least favorite. While it was cool to learn a little about the days when Luke, Thalia, and show more Annabeth ran together before going to Camp Half-Blood, I found it hard to really care about Luke given his eventual fate.

I especially liked "Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes" because it marked a return to first-person POV style found in the first Percy Jackson series. It was also nice to see hints about what's happening in The Heroes of Olympus.

I also liked "Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford" as it provided some interesting backstory that fills in gaps between the end of The Lost Hero and the start of The Mark of Athena, and it helped re-introduce Leo, Piper, and Jason, who I expect to play a part in the rest of The Heroes of Olympus stories.

"Son of Magic" was interesting because it not only provided back ground on the Mists and how monsters can "smell" demi-gods, but it also gives readers a look at the world of Percy Jackson from the POV of a mortal. This was a very interesting view of the Percy Jackson world, and one that I would love to see in future short stories.

I highly recommend this to anyone who's read and enjoyed other Percy Jackson stories. It's a great addition to Percy Jackson lore, and is a great filler between "The Son of Neptune" and "The Mark of Athena".

Not a must-buy or must-read, but worth a look if you're already a major fan of Camp Half-Blood. Riordan's regular readers will find that this fills in some plot gaps and provides some character history in his usual teenage-snark fashion; the illustrations are done very well, particularly the diagram of Bunker 9 and most of the demigod portraits. The puzzles are just filler, though, and the story by Riordan's son Haley, while good for a 16-year-old, doesn't quite match the quality and tone of the other selections. Not a bad way to warm up for the last two Heroes of Olympus books, though.
