The most versatile novelist of the Generation of 1930, Erico Verissimo, was born in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, where he spent most of his youth. Verissimo began to publish short stories in the magazine Madrugada and later, while manager of the magazine Revista do Globo, he selected and translated English prose. In 1932 he show more published a series of short stories under the title Fantoches. His first novel Clarissa, was published in 1933 and was followed by a dozen more. Verissimo's interests also extended to children's literature, and he published ten books in that genre. All of Verissimo's works display clear messages of peace, justice, and brotherhood.
