Description

In this classic science fiction adventure, a fiery doomsday threatens an alien world--and the human colonists who have made it their home. Firetime is coming to Ishtar. This once-in-a-millennium event occurs when one of the planet's three suns encroaches on Ishtar's surface, to disastrous effect. The nightmare rapidly approaching, barbaric tribes have declared war on their more civilized brethren in hopes of avoiding a natural extermination. Standing between the opposing forces are the show more colonists who settled on Ishtar after abandoning their home planet, Earth. But in this time of chaos and destruction, there is little the humans can do to aid their Ishtarian allies in the desperate fight for survival. The Terran powers, engaged in their own terrible conflict with a hostile alien race, will offer no help to the endangered planet. With a fiery doomsday on the way, the humans can do nothing but watch and wait--and pray for a miracle that will forestall the inevitable apocalypse.   A stunning work of speculative invention from one of the all-time masters of science fiction and fantasy, Poul Anderson's classic Fire Time is a richly imagined tale of war, alien contact, and environmental catastrophe that brilliantly questions the concepts of right and wrong, good and evil, and heroism and villainy. show less

This is one of Anderson's more satisfying novels for me. It involves a system in which a "demon star" periodically moves through the region of a planet which usually has a fairly normal earthlike climate. This disrupts the lives of a militant nomadic culture of aliens --usually they just suffer, but this time they have a strong capable leader of the Genghis Khan type (though they are not horse archers) who is leading his people to invade the more settled lands and escape the worst effects of the demon star. The settled aliens have good relations with the local human colony, some of whose small military decide to help their friends despite Terran laws against it.
Spoiler warning: My favorite moment is when the nomad leader is heroically show more killed but has a death vision of leading both races in war against the demon star. show less
For every high point, there were just as many low points in this book. Several passages were gripping in the tale the wove of two species surviving an essential apocalypse, while others are just as forgettable.
A similiar concept to Aldiss' Heliconia novels, but in reverse, a planet that goes through a very hot cycle when one of its stars approaches, causing the fall of civilization, usually. This time humans are there to help prevent it, maybe. A much shorter treatment of the ecosystem gone mad concept. Global warming long before it was a fad!
This is a story about a planet with severe global warming problems. It also has a platonic love affair and very good pacing. A fun time for Poul's fans.

Reminiscent of "Against the Fall of Night" but with its own charm, and story to tell. Poul is a master.

Finalista al Premio Hugo 1975 show less

Poul Anderson, November 25, 1926 - July 31, 2001 Poul Anderson was born on November 25, 1926 in Bristol, Pennsylvania to parents Anton and Astrid. After his father's death, Poul's mother took them first to Denmark and then to Maryland and Minnesota. He earned his degree in Physics from the University of Minnesota, but chose instead to write show more stories for science fiction magazines, such as "Astounding." Anderson is considered a "hard science fiction" writer, meaning that his books have a basis in scientific fact. To attain this high level of scientific realism, Anderson spent many hours researching his topics with scientists and professors. He liked to write about individual liberty and free will, which was a well known theme in many of his books. He also liked to incorporate his love of Norse mythology into his stories, sometimes causing his modern day characters to find themselves in fantastical worlds, such as in "Three Hearts and Three Lions," published in 1961. Anderson has written over a hundred books, his last novel, "Genesis" won the John W. Campbell Award, one of the three major science fiction awards. He is a former president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and won three Nebula awards and nine Hugo Awards. In 1997, Anderson was named a Grandmaster by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and was also inducted into the Science Fiction Fantasy Hall of Fame. Poul Anderson died on July 31, 2001 at the age of 74. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
