Wouldn’t it be great if you could if you played professional soccer? Well young Santiago Munez was born in Mexico and he illegally emigrated from Mexico to LA when he was young and he plays soccer for Americanos and one day he gets scouted from Glen Foy who is a former Newcastle United player and scout.
Glen gets Santiago a trial with Newcastle but he doesn’t have enough money so Santi’s grandmother buys him a train ticket and plane ticket and he flies over to England and does his trial but he doesn’t tell anyone about his asthma. He trains with the reserves his first day and slips a lot cause he’s not used to the weather and he does bad and they say he won’t get another trial but Glen show more gets him a 1 month trial through some hard work and chasing the manager around .
He does really good in the trial so he gets a match for the reserves and he comes off the bench and scores a really good goal and next match he starts but Hughie from the reserves doesn’t like Santi and he steps on his puffer before the game and Santiago plays really bad and the manager of the first team watches him play. The manager thinks about letting Santi go but Gavin Harris the first team player tells the coach that Santi is really good and he lets him stay.
From then on in the reserves he played really good and scores lots of goals and he gets pushed up into the first team. He started on the bench most of the games but when he came on against Fulham he scored a volley and they won that game and they had to win to try and get into Europe for next season and they had two games left and they had to win them both. The second last game was against Chelsea and they were losing 1 nil and the manager bought Santi on and he scored 1 and so did Gavin Harris Santi’s best friend.
Meanwhile when Santi went to hospital he met Roz she is a nurse and they become boyfriend and girlfriend and in the last game of the season against Liverpool Santiago is starting and so is Gavin Harris. Within 5 minutes of the game Liverpool is winning 1-0 and at half time the score is the same. And right after half time Santi scores a really good goal. But Liverpool came firing back with a goal and with only 5 minutes to go Newcastle had to score 2 goals. Gavin Harris got a penalty and scores so its 2-2 and with only 1 minute to go Santi is on the run but he gets tripped over and he gets a free kick and takes it. As he kicks it, it curls like a banana and the crowd is silently watching the ball and It curls in to the top corner and Newcastle win 3-2 and qualify for Europe and Santiago played a great game.
I thought this is a great book and is the best way to explain how you can play professional soccer. This book also explains that anyone can be a professional soccer player and you don’t have to be rich to play professional. If you love soccer this book would be great and so are all the series. show less

One of my middle school son's books, based on the movie of the same name. This was a good, wholesome, feel-good story about an illegal immigrant from Mexico who is "discovered" playing soccer in an LA park and ends up playing in England for Newcastle.
Goal! A Dream Begins was a wonderful book! Santiago was a mexican city boy who want to play pro soccer. He was watched by a scout at one of his mini soccer games. The scout invited him to try out for New Castle. Santiao taught me to never give up and to go for your dreams!
A very good sports and romance to have to read if you like soccer
