Description

One of the fiercest soldiers the Phrixians have ever produced, Maris Sulle has been an outsider his whole life. He grew up with a secret that cost him everything—his birthright, his family, his military career. He's only ever had one love, and Maris has sacrificed that to see his best friend reunited with the woman he loves. His good deed done, he now feels lost and adrift. Even though his new family does its best to include him, he's once again on the outside looking in.

Ture has spent show more his life hiding from everyone around him while trying desperately to fit in. Badly hurt by everyone he's ever known, he trusts no one except his best friend—and honestly, he can't understand why he trusts her. Nor can he believe her when she describes a loyalty between friends the likes of which he's never seen.

But in his darkest hour, Ture is saved by a hero he thought only existed in novels, a man every bit as scarred and mistrusting as he is and who has no interest in being dragged into another relationship with anyone.

Having spent his life as a living study of doomed relationships, Maris is well aware of the fiasco that must inevitably follow courtship. Still, there is something about Ture he can't resist—something that won't let him walk away even when he knows he should.

And when old enemies return to threaten them both, these two must either stand together or die alone.

I couldn't get this one in print, so I listened to the audiobook. It was fantastic. Another reviewer complained about how highly effeminate Maris and Ture are, complaining about the stereotyping ... If you read it, Ture is softer than most men in his speech, but not weak in his behaviours at all. Maris is VERY flamboyant, but that has been a choice he made years earlier for reasons explained throughout the series and he clearly shows himself capable of the other extreme.

It is a shorter read, but I think that is because much of both their stories are covered in details of earlier books and it would have been redundant bordering on tedious to revisit that. This story fills in some blanks and moves the series forward without making it seem show more the author questions your intelligence and/or dedication to the series as a whole. show less
Audiobook narrated by Holter Graham.

This is a great little story from SKenyon. I've otherwise only read the first book in the series, but now I'm seriously tempted to go back and read the whole series from the beginning.

My only complaints were that Holter Graham (narrator), who generally did a very good job, had too high a voice for Maris; it was like he was portraying a girl. It really threw me at times, especially considering that Maris was such a deadly killer!

And I almost felt that Kenyon tried too hard to pull the 'gay' off for her two characters - hats off to her for including a gay couple in her series; it's why I bought this book. But seriously - neither character to me were effeminate nor had the luxury of living in a world show more that tolerated that (hello? death sentence here?), so the odd comment/action to remind us jarred a bit. show less
Maris, what a sweetheart. This poor man has been beaten, battered, bullied and unloved most of his life except for one person Darling. It has been painful to watch his love for Darling over the last books. While Darling loves him it is not a romantic love, and yet it is unbreakable. Maris has told his lovers that he will never love anyone more than his precious friend and with that they leave him. So, he stands to the side watching his friend have the love he will never get and willing to live that way forever.
omg it has been heartbreaking to watch him suffer.
His suffering might come to an end with one rescue. He rescues someone who will challenge everything he believes in about his worth, and his ability to love. This new guy is show more absolutely wonderful. He's a chef, an honest man, a generous friend and has known his own sorrows for too long. Together, these two struggle to go beyond the scars.
I love these characters in this series, the good guys, not the bad guys. These are good solid people, who offer themselves up for the good of others. Maris and Ture are two of the best. I loved reading this story it left me smiling and there is nothing wrong with that.

Oh goodie! Maris gets an HEA of his very own - which he so deserves for sticking in there and supporting Darling through thick & thin. That said, Kenyon drifts way off into stereotype-land with the characters' "sensitive" language & fashionista tendencies. A bit too, too over the top perhaps? Have to wonder, was this book Kenyon's answer to J.R. Ward's Lover at Last? Whatever the reason, glad to see some mainstream romance authors giving their gay supporting characters some time to shine.

Phrixian, Maris Sulle hasn't had the easiest of lives. Tormented by his own family for being different as well as school mates, that is until he meets Darling Cruel his best friend. From that day on he is in love with Darling. No one has held any interest to him but Darling (even though Darling is straight) that is until he saves and meets Ture. An event that changes both of them.

This is only the second M/M I have read, but its one of my favorites. Maris Sulle is a bad ass warrior, one that has been through hell and back but still he is so vibrant that you can't help but love him. Cloak & Silence is a fast read, but absolutely enjoyable. Maris and Ture's story is filled with action, heartbreak and warmth. I think fans will love them. show more This is a must read, especially if you have been reading The League. show less
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

Cloak & Silence was an incredible follow-up to Born of Silence and well worth the wait in its release in my honest opinion.

Action packed, tender, a pivotal turning point for several of our key players in the League-verse and just a great story, Cloak & Silence was another Kenyon home run and a must read for all League fans!

It should be noted that this novella can't be fully enjoyed if you haven't read the previous installments of the LEAGUE series, especially Born of Silence, book #5, as it picks up immediately following the pivotal events at the end of BoS and then continues forward.

It was incredible to get the full story of Maris' tragic past and be able to finally show more understand him even better. Getting this back-story, as well as some snippets into the back-story of some of our other leading characters, made the storyline more emotionally gripping, Maris' HEA an even greater reward, and was a great segue to future installments of the series.

I am chomping at the bit for Hauk's book, Born Of Fury,in November now that I finally got re-immersed in the LEAGUE!

I haven't picked up a book by Sherrilyn Kenyon before so I decided to jump right in with a book I had been gifted. Turns out - don't start in the middle of this series. You need to understand the first six books to get what's going on in this one.

The writing is good but it's not really my style. It felt like there was a lot of nothing going on for most of the story and since I didn't know all the background to what happened before, I was very, very lost. I think Sherrilyn is a good writer, but I definitely needed to know all of the background to get anything about the story. Like the weird Phrixian race - I don't know what it is, what they look like, anything. The two men falling in love was fantastic, but I couldn't understand their show more differences since I didn't know why humans and Phrixians shouldn't be friends.

There were a lot of stereotypes and the homophobia was... not amazing. I can tell the writer doesn't normally write M/M romances and well... it didn't work well but I will take the attempt as a positive since it means this fictional world has M/M romances...

Overall, good story and I'm sure fans of this series will like it.

One out of five stars.
