Description

Thomas Nast was a political cartoonist whose pencil was mightier than any sword. His work was so popular that it helped shape much of the political policy of the 1860s and 1870s. This biography, originally published in 1904, serves up his life as well as the times in which he practiced his art.

This book is a reproduction of the original 1904 biography by a long-time friend of Nast's; it came out shortly after Nast passed away, and some years after he had faded out of the public limelight. It was, for many years, the standard biography of Nast, and still remains entertaining, especially since it is very rich in copies of Nast's work from Harper's Weekly. I have seen some revisionist thought on Nast, especially some of his more virulent anti-Catholic cartoons (a reflection of his German upbringing), but this still remains a book you need to read if you want to learn about Nast. Recommended.
