"Obsession isn't love any more than vengeance is justice."
Wow. this book was exactly what I'd hoped it would be. Lots of mystery and gore and confusion wrapped into an interesting plot.
Rachel, although dead as soon as the book starts, is very much a real character in this book - her personality is so big and so wild that it's almost as if she's still alive.
Jaycee is sweet and goody-goody but you can really see how this situation and losing Rachel really transforms who she is and what she is willing to do - in order to bring justice for Rachel.
It kept me guessing until the very end. I had my theories and I had ideas but it wasn't until it was all out there, in the last chapter, that I really found out everything. Very well done, show more [a:Jennifer Shaw Wolf|4750309|Jennifer Shaw Wolf|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1305234704p2/4750309.jpg]. This one will definitely stick with me. show less

Right before Rachel was killed she sent her best friend Jaycee a text asking her for help, and she ignored it. Now Jaycee must figure out what happened to Rachel or she will never be able to live with herself. Who would have wanted Rachel dead? There is handsome Eric who has been Jaycee's crush forever, but Rachel spent New Year's Eve with him. What about Skylar, Eric's quiet younger brother who was with Jaycee on the night Rachel died and is the reason she ignored her text. Then there are the Hispanic migrant workers in town that nobody seems to trust including the enigmatic Eduardo who seemed to have some connection to Rachel and has a huge chip on his shoulder. Why did Rachel change so much in the months before her death? Piercings, show more dyed hair, and revealing clothing had never been a part of Rachel's life before their visit to the abandoned house where Rachel had seen something that made her scream and come away covered in blood.
This is a good thriller about guilt and the lengths that it can make us go to find the truth - a good but sad story. show less

This YA novel caught my eye because I enjoyed one of the author's other books and wanted to keep up with her work. This is more of a mystery novel than I realized it would be but in a good way. Set in eastern Washington, it weaves the tale of a friendship gone wrong and how the main character is haunted by the murder of her friend and wants to make it right by learning the truth. I don't think the book's title does it justice. The ending plot got a little muddled for me and somewhat implausible, but others might disagree and I really enjoyed the main character's journey through the story. I recommend others give the book a try if you like this type of YA fiction.
This wasn't what I expected. I kind of knew what was going on and who killed her friend and I was just waiting for the MC to figure it out. I didn't really know anyone or feel connected with any character other than Jaycee and Rachel. I wish there was more to the story because there's so much I feel is left out.
I love a good mystery and I think that's one genre that is severely lacking in YA lit so I was excited to read this one. While it was somewhat entertaining, it just didn't have the level of suspense or mystery that I was hoping for. It wasn't a bad book. It just wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be.
As far as the mystery itself goes, I didn't really know where things were going in the beginning but I had it all figured out by the halfway point. There were still some details that were surprising and I think some people may find the villain(s?) to be a surprise as well.
I think this book really tried to be more suspenseful than it actually was. There were some genuinely creepy scenes and situations for Jaycee but I never really show more felt that ramp up of danger and excitement that I feel with really great mysteries.
Jaycee herself was one of my least favorite parts of this book. She was indecisive and insecure and annoyed me throughout the book. I get that she was put in situations where she didn't know what the right thing to do was, but I had to read her whine about it over and over. I just didn't really like Jaycee all that much. I also really questioned her judgement when it came to people and who to trust. There seemed to be red flags waving all over the place that she just never saw and that was frustrating to me as a reader.
I did like that there were issues of race and economic disparity between the residents of the town and the Mexican migrant workers hired to work the local farms. I think that could have been explored a little bit more. I liked the idea that people should be judged on who they are and their motivations rather than only on where they're from or what they've done in the past.
Overall, this one was just so-so for me. I enjoyed it but it wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be. If you're looking for the next great mystery, this probably isn't it. This will be an enjoyable read as long as your expectations aren't too high. show less

Yes, the heroine was a bit annoying in the beginning and yes, it dragged a little toward the end, but overall Dead Girls Don't Lie was an amazing, entertaining read. I enjoyed it.
I figured it out way too early . . .
