Edgar Rice Burrougs did it again! This is the seventh Barsoom book, and still this book is a pleasure to read. Once more Burroughs created situations, persons and communities on Barsoom that are novel and intersting enough to give you a pleasant time while reading about them. It is difficult to realise that this book was written about 100 years ago. It is still fresh as were it written nowadays.
In this book the "I" is a native Martian (although his way of thinking is very "earthly" and this, but only this, could be a minor point of criticism) and once more John Carter plays only a very small role.
If you like this kind of books, read it! If you don't you won't even see this review. So I guess you do like this kind of "pulp fiction". show more Whatever! It is pure reading pleasure. This is in fact one of the best Barsoom books. However, there are four more to come, so I can't be certain how the rest is. What I am certain of, is that I will read them all! show less

A Martian soldier tries to do some rescuing.
2.5/4 (Okay).
It has almost nothing in the way of interesting ideas, and the plot is just a series of captures and escapes, rinse and repeat. But it always keeps moving, and it features an amusingly oblivious hero.

a red martian man goes to rescue a martian woman who has been kidnapped. In the process he falls in love with another, discovers yet another crazed, world domineering wannabe and yet another mad scientist. Everything works out in the end. Burroughs uses the word indubitably". How pretentious."
Brave fighting using cloaks of invisibility and an almost-invisible flying ship. The hero sets out to rescue the woman he thinks he loves, but treachery and deception abound. A slave girl saves the day.
Another good book with an especially intriguing romance. I wonder if I am that dense?
One of my first novels. Ah such memories
Volume 7 in the John Carter books.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago. His father, George Tyler was a distiller and a battery manufacturer. Early in life Burroughs attempted to support his family in a variety of occupations, including railroad policeman, business partner, and miner. None of these proved successful. However, Burroughs had always enjoyed show more reading adventure fiction and decided to try his hand at writing. His first attempt, written under the pseudonym Normal Bean, sold very quickly and Burroughs' career took off. Although critics and educators have not always been supportive of Burroughs' writing, the characters in his stories have entertained readers for many years. Tarzan was the most popular, earning Burroughs enough money to start his own publishing house and a motion picture company. Another character, John Carter, is the hero of Burroughs' Mars adventure series. The continuing popularity of these characters has led some critics to reconsider the value of Burroughs' writing and to acknowledge significant themes in his stories. Burroughs died on March 19, 1950. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
