There’s some sort of continuing story but literally no-one cares and you can read these books in any order. In this one Daniel Craig’s ex-girlfriend is visiting Craggy Island when she’s stolen by the baddie. There’s a handy content-guide graphic on the back which promises terror, thrills, conspiracy, and drama. This is accurate. There’s also some melodrama which Mariani delivers with a massive wink to the reader. This is far from being the best of the Ben Hope books as the story in this one relies too much on a series of coincidences, but I literally didn’t care at the time as it’s fast paced and unpretentious. A paperback thriller that knows what it is. ( )

The Armada Legacy by Scott Mariani.

Book Six in the Ben Hope series.

Yet again Mariani provides us with another fast-paced thriller. As a specialist in recovering kidnapped people, the tables are turned on Hope when he has to try to locate Dr Marcel Brooke with whom he has had an on-off relationship. She is abducted under unusual circumstances, but her captor has a particular reason for wanting to acquire her for himself. The legacy referred to is connected with the Armada in that something very important is discovered on a wrecked Armada ship off the coast of Ireland.

The villain of the peace in this adventure is a former Colombian drug dealer with pretensions not only to great wealth, but also to ennobling himself through the discovery in the wreck. With his history he does, of course, have some particularly unpleasant sidekicks, but is not unhappy to perform acts of violence himself.

This could be the last of the Ben Hope series if the course of action described at the end of the book actually comes about! A ripping read – one that I found hard to put down, and that is the first time I have said that in a couple of months.

4.5 stars.

FinishedThe Armada Legacy by Scott Mariani, book 8 in the Ben Hope Series. Another very enjoyable book, but would have liked a bit more history as a back drop. Full of action and adventure. 4 stars. Recommend this series to others. ( )

The Armada legacy is the eighth novel in the Ben Hope series by author Scott Mariani. A sunken Spanish warship that was part of the Spanish Armada sent to invade England is recovered revealing many treasures. It is also includes some secret documents that if revealed could change the understanding of British history of the time. Dr Brooke Marcel is invited to the celebration party by one of her friends, only it turns out that someone else will stop at nothing to get their hands on those documents. That's when Dr Brooke Marcel is kidnapped and others found dead. On hearing of his on-off girlfriends disappearance Ben Hope tracks her down in a journey that will take him first to Spain and then to the heart of the Peruvian jungle.

Don't expect a strong historical conspiracy in this book. Scott Mariani gave up those pretensions a long time ago. Read the full review here ( )
