The shock of modernity is one of my favourite of history's many shocks. I read this during my long-lost university years while writing an essay on how 1920s amusement parks at New York's Coney Island reflected the massive culture shock of people born in the 19th century and being forced to submit to the flood of modernism. A formative read for me.
