A true tale retold in the expected Cabellian style. One of Cabell's under-appreciated achievements. For a shorter retelling, without the trappings of ironic romance or dark comic novel, look for the chapter in "Let Me Lie" entitled "The First Virginian." It is a masterwork of droll prose. This, more involved story, takes the material to greater, perhaps even more satisfying length.
