The author addresses the anxiety, distrust, and potential for violence that characterize the border of all borders: the strait that divides Africa and Europe, where the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet. His often-remarked prose style, at once rich and spare, endows his work with remarkable elegance. Rey Rosa generates a powerful reality within his imagined world, and he maintains a narrative tension to the haunting conclusion, raising small and large questions that linger in the reader's mind long after the final page. A lovely novella that was a bit of reading serendipity for me with other recent reads that have included a Moroccan connection (A Life Full of Holes: A Novel Recorded and Translated by Paul Bowles and Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow).

J'étais intriguée par ce « coup de cœur » de Renaud-Bray: roman guatémaltèque situé au Maroc. L'auteur situe merveilleusement son histoire, à Tanger et dans ses environs, et ses personnages sont variés : berger, Européennes, Colombiens, etc. Par contre, l'intrigue est difficile à suivre - le fil conducteur est une chouette qui visiblement représente le personnage principal, mais comme on ne sait pas vraiment ni ce que devient la chouette ni le personnage, on reste un petit peu sur sa faim. C'est un roman qui mérite sans doute plus d'une lecture, car elle se situe définitivement à plusieurs niveaux. Vaut le détour, mais la réflexion est de rigueur.
