REVIEW:
The story:
This book basically continues on from where My Favourite Mistake finished (however these can be read as stand alone novels). Jos, Renee's little sister, has been struggling to deal with a traumatic event that occurred last year. She started to drink and party too hard, and as a result her sister Renee forces her to transfer college and live under her watchful eye. And by watchful Renee means, Not-Even-Allowed-To-Pee-Without-My-Permission.
After moving in with her sister and her friends, Jos continues to feel lost alone in the world, believing she's not entitled to be happy. But after meeting Dusty Sharp, she doesn't feel so isolated. He doesn't let her tough angry attitude keep him away from her, and he works to break show more through her walls and discover the real Jos. Dusty understands exactly what she's going through - more so than either of them could ever imagine. And it's that connection plus their shared passion for music that draws them closer together
The characters:
Jos is going through a bit of an identity crisis. When she first started college 9 months ago, she was popular, wore the latest fashion and was dating the 'it' boy who has his sights set on the white house, but after the traumatic event, Jos started to question all the things she stood for. Now she has the opportunity to reinvent herself, she starts to discover what she really wants to do with her life. I loved watching her grow throughout the novel as she became more and more confident in who she wants to be.
Dusty came across as a typical college guy; confident, popular and of course not to bad on the eyes. He's majoring in music education and is a beat boxer, which leads to some fun jam sessions with all the cast of characters joining in. But as Jos gets to know Dusty better, we start to see a vulnerable side to him, and we learnt to a major event recently changed his attitude to life - he longer drinks or parties the way he used to. He'd much prefer to hang out with his friends, in particular Jos…oh and his little Kitten, Napoleon too.
I also loved Jos's new friend, Hannah. She has severe burn scaring down the side of her face and body, and it's clear that the stares and nasty whispers upset her. But despite this she has a beautiful and vibrant personality, and still has a very positive outlook on life. I am desperately hoping that the third book in this series follows her story...PLEASE CHELSEA!!!
It was also great to see all the cast from the first book back for this sequel. There are developments in all their lives, which made me so excited. I kind of want to move into that house with them all - I think it would awesome amounts of fun!
The romance:
I was so happy to see that the romance was slow building. After all that Jos has gone through, a new relationship happening that quickly wouldn't have been believable. Instead we get to see them start out as friends, and just get to know each other. It was clear that they both felt an attraction towards one another, but they are hesitant to act on it, unsure how the other feels. There is also a touch of forbidden love, since Dusty is Renee's friend and she doesn't want him messing around with her little sister.
The Writing:
Oh I love Chelsea's writing, which is a good thing since this is my 6th book by her! She has a very distinct writing style with sarcastic and sassy characters and dialogue that is particularly effective. With sharp and witty conversations, it can sometimes feel like verbal foreplay. She also uses lots of pop culture references, which reminded me a lot of Gilmore Girls (which is my favourite TV show EVER!!)
FINAL WORD:
This is one of my favourite books my Chelsea! My Sweetest Escape is a fun and flirty book with vibrant, loveable characters. If you love heroines with a bit a sass and a redeemed bad boy hero who loves to cuddle up with his cat, than this book is for you!
CONTENT:
Sexuality: medium-strong / sex scene
Violence: mild / minor punch up
Language: medium / frequent f words
Drugs & alcohol: medium / some underage drinking and references to past drug use show less

My Sweetest Escape is second in the My Favorite Mistake series but can be read as a stand alone.
In this story, Joscelyn Archer suffers a traumatic event which had her spiraling downhill, drinking and using drugs and doing poorly in school. Her older sister Renee has Jos transfer to a college near her and live at her house, Yellowfield House, which she shares with close friends. Renee plans on looking after Jos and making sure she stays on the right path.
Renee is super watchful of Jos, almost mother-like and sometimes she’s really too much. She was just one the characters in this book that was over dramatic.
As Jos goes to classes, she makes a best friend, a girl named Hannah whose face is severely scarred from burns. Hannah was a show more favorite character, her outlook was sassy and she didn’t hide her face and shy away from people because she was scarred. I think Hannah needs her own book in this series. It was interesting how a supporting character really stole the show here.
Jos also meets a guy named Dusty Sharp. Dusty is funny, charismatic, dark and handsome with light eyes. He also beat boxes. Now this is when I came to realize that I am way to old for this book, but I digress.
Dusty beat boxes. He is very good at it and even assists during a wedding proposal scene by adding beat box effects in the background. Don’t ask, I will get back to Dusty in a moment.
Against her will Jos begins to fall for him of course, but the two resist the attraction.
Jos and Dusty each have a secret they are keeping. When these secrets were revealed, they seemed over rated and the melodrama was too much, especially with Jos’s behavior. It became almost soap opera-like.
Aside from the melodrama, I liked that Jos was into music and starts a music review blog. Her blogging and listening to music are nicely woven into the storyline.
I have a bone to pick now.
I did not like the way the author wrote Dusty’s character by giving him some really stereotypical traits. It is obvious by the cover that he is African-American or ethnic, as it is by her descriptions of him. I noticed the stereotyping right away.
So, what does Dusty do? As I mentioned, he beat boxes. He also wears baggy, slouchy pants that are falling down and Jo even asks at one point how he keeps them up. He also wears baggy hooded sweatshirts. There is no mention of the other characters dressing this way in this book, which takes place in Maine.
So, aside from the stereotyping of the one single dark-skinned male character, author Chelsea M. Cameron did a nice job at intertwining a group of characters and making them seem like real friends. I’ll give her that. If only she would have written Dusty differently...
This one was not full of sex scenes, which was nice. Jos and Hannah are saving themselves for marriage and I liked seeing that in new adult romance, or anywhere really. I cannot remember the last time I read a character doing so.
While I had qualms with Dusty’s character, the rest of the story was alright. Sweet, fluffy romance, but some characters did annoy me.
Disclaimer: This review is my honest opinion. I did not receive any kind of compensation for reading and reviewing this book. I am under no obligation to write a positive review. I received my free review copy of My Sweetest Escape (My Favorite Mistake Book 2) by Chelsea M. Cameron via Amazon Vine.

If you love a book packed with romance, angst, and mystery... This one is for you!
I devoured this book in two days and I didn't want it to end. The story was full of twists and turns that led to an angsty romance. Both characters carry heavy burdens from their pasts and when they start to fall for one another secrets are slowly revealed. The sexual tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife and when they finally give in... it's fireworks!!
The emotional depth of this book will tug on your heartstrings. It really proves how important family ties and friendships are when dealing with life changing events.
One thing unique about this book are the character's traits. They are different and not perfect like the usual... I LOVED show more THEM!
Highly Recommend. show less

For those who follow my reviews closely, you’ll know that I’m a fan of Chelsea M. Cameron’s work. I’ve read a few of her other books, like [b:My Favorite Mistake|17348308|My Favorite Mistake (My Favorite Mistake, #1)|Chelsea M. Cameron|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1370774562s/17348308.jpg|21441527] (the first in this two book “series”), and seem latch onto many of Cameron’s strengths when reading.
One of my favorite things about this book was the main character, Jos Archer. I think the author did a great job writing all of her characters, both main and secondary, for this book, but Jos was one of my favorites. I guess that’s normal since she’s the narrator too. I really felt for her throughout everything that went on. show more I also liked her love of music, writing, and her other characteristics.
Since this is a companion to My Favorite Mistake, we also get many of the characters introduced in that book. It was great get reacquainted with them and the college setting in Maine. One of Cameron’s strengths is setting, in my opinion.
I’ll admit that I wasn’t too sold or charmed by Dusty, but I wasn’t totally turned off from him either. In a few key parts he irked me with his actions, but he’s also a great guy at the heart of it all. I can’t fault him too much.
I’d be happy if Cameron were to revisit this series with another book. I think I know what character could take the lead, as well. I’d definitely be one of the first to grab that book. show less

Jos...living the perfect life so it would seem. Until something happened that forever changed her. Long gone is Mrs. Perfect & a much wilder version has emerged. And now she has been forced to transfer to her sister's college so she can be with her sister (aka mini-mom) and they can try to help her. AKA keep a close eye on her. When she meets Dusty, she isn't sure if his flirting is friendly or something more. Can she trust him? How does he really feel about her? And when she realizes the connection he has to her past, can she move forward?
I really enjoyed this book. Just enough build-up, angst & good story to keep me hooked. Plenty of fun & humor in it too. (I loved their 'jam sessions'.) But the cover, while smoking HOT, is a total show more miss (as far matching the story.)

Jos is suffering from the loss of her best friend. She blames herself for the things that happened to cause this loss. She has decided to live her life day by day instead of living for the future. She has moved in with her sister and the rest of the gang.
Since everyone seems to thing that Jos is spiraling out of control, they keep a close eye on her and everything she does. Enter Dusty. He is sarcastic and attractive. The last thing Jos wants on her plate. She really tries her best to avoid him. The feelings he stirs inside her are dangerous and she doesn't want to have them.
Dusty. He has suffered and made mistakes. He has put his life on the right track. He is more than show more interested in getting to know Jos. He will put himself in any position that will get him closer to getting to know this knew person.
The friendships and relationships that are built in this book are strong. But as always, there are secrets. Secrets that will either tear Jos and Dusty apart from one another before they even come together or they will bring them closer together. Secrets in this book show that it really is a small world after all!
I really liked this book. I just could not put it down! And I wasn't disappointed in any way! This book is different from the first. It does have the characters from the first, but it isn't centered around them. It is equally as good as the first book though! show less
