Hannah's Night

Wow. This really brought me back to being a small child awake in a sleeping house. Amazing! The illustrations didn't hold much appeal at first, but I'm glad I gave it a read because they're just about perfectly tuned to the text. Whoever translated this from the Japanese is clearly British (the phrases "have a pee" and "told her off" are not necessarily going to confuse little Americans, but they'll probably be unfamiliar).

Anna si sveglia nella notte e svolge da sola varie attività nella casa
mentre tutto il resto della famiglia dorme, il suo gatto la segue.
Disegna, fa pipi, guarda fuori, ...
All'alba arriva il sonno e si addormenta con il gatto.

Hannah's Night is a short read, as Hannah wakes up during the night and explores the house. Meanwhile, everyone else - including her sister - is asleep.

The illustrations are unique and the book feels luxurious to the touch. Komako does an amazing job of capturing the essence of night time and Hannah is a cute and relatable character. This would be a fabulous story to read with a young child at bedtime, and would make a wonderful Christmas gift.
