A totally absorbing true story of a young southern girl diagnosed with leprosy. Whisked away to Carville, the only leprosy facility in the United States, she adjusts slowly to the stigma, the lack of effective medicine, the isolation and the loss of her former life.
Betty introduces us to a number of unforgettable characters in the decades she spent in Carville, including the bitter young man she eventually falls in love with. The couple leave Carville for a time (escape is the accurate word), but when her husband's disease becomes worse they return to find that strides are being made leprosy treatment. Although this book was written in the 50's, it ends with hope and the promise of a brighter future. I looked up Carville and leprosy show more on the internet and was pleased to see that things are indeed better. show less

- Dedication
- I am grateful to so many whom I came to know and love during the difficult years. There were helping hands all along the way.
In the beginning I had my wonderful mother and father. Then there wee Robert, Dr. Jo, the Sist... (show all)ers, Stanley, and all my dear friends among the patients...And lastly there is the husband around whom my life revolves. Without his assistance in helping me to remember and express the past twenty years this book would not have been written.
From these I absorbed the courage and spiritual strength that brought me through. - First words
- The most beautiful Christmas was when I was nineteen and the world was mine - the world being New Orleans and its gaiety and the fun of being engaged and in love for the first time.
- Last words
- (Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)All else, to the smallest flower and simplest pleasure found along the way, would be His special gifts.
