Whilst noting that psychoanalysis is one of the most important voices in present culture to maintain the importance of individuality, the author takes the postmodern view that gender, race, social class, and religion do not define the individual's essence. The book explores some strategies of self-creation and the protest against fate that motivates them. Carlo Strenger is Chair of the Clinical Graduate Program of the Department of Psychology at Tel Aviv University. He serves on the Terrorism Panel of the World Federation of Scientists, the Seminar of Existential Psychoanalysis in Zurich, and the Scientific Board of the Sigmund Freud Foundation in Vienna, in addition to maintaining a part-time show more practice in existential psychoanalysis.
