My interest in kiln building is pretty much limited to improvised, temporary kilns, but I found this book very interesting and quite impressive. The chapter at the end about unusual and experimental kilns had quite a few examples of monumental sculptures fired under circumstances where the sculpture becomes its own kiln, and that blew me away. I had no idea that was possible.
