Els llibres de Sven Hassel segueixen un grup molt unit de soldats durant la major part de la guerra, soldats que han estat comandats per la força al regiment penal de les Forces Armades alemanyes, el 27è Blindat. Es veuen obligats a lluitar en una guerra en la qual cap d'ells creu. Pocs escriptors han capturat la brutal realitat de la Segona Guerra Mundial i l'humor il·lusionat i grotesc dels soldats amb tanta pressa i amb un realisme tan ombrívol.
Sven Hassels böcker följer en sammansvetsad grupp soldater under större delen av kriget – soldater som tvångskommenderats til tyska krigsmaktens straffregemente, 27:e pansar. De tvingas utkämpa ett krig ingen av dem tror på. Få författare har som Hassel, så närgånget och med en så bister realism fångat andra väldskrigets brutale verklighet och soldaternas illusionslösa, grokorniga humor.

Sven Hassel was born Sven Pedersen in Fredensborg, Denmark on April 19, 1917. He joined the Danish merchant navy at age 14 and served a mandatory stretch in the Danish military before joining the German army in 1937. He adopted his mother's maiden name, Hassel, when he began writing. His first novel, The Legion of the Damned, was published in show more 1953.
