Oh, how marvelous! Love the art, love the story, especially love the asides - the three boats from other books (I was convinced that the "confused" boat was from Jerome K Jerome, but a blogger on SLJ (?) set me straight), the "salty" Skipper who helped them...and I'm now wondering if the "lumpy hat" island is an homage to Paddington! Oh, and the name of the boat. What else will be hidden in re-readings? Like the image of the not-so-fun island - is that a reference? Anyway, the story is great, too - "who, after all, was a bear" - that made me laugh. And the squinty mad bear eyes...too funny. Yes, I could go on for a very long time about this, what, 40 page book? Loved it.
These illustrations! Ranging from striking seascapes to comedic vignettes, they alone could make Three Bears in a Boat worth the read. That the story accompanying them is sweet and fresh and adept at offering a lesson without feeling preachy or predictable is even better.
In this book, three young bear siblings broke their mother's blue seashell. They panicked and went on a journey to sea to find a new shell. They met many different bears and explored new islands, and in the end realized they had to tell their mother what happened and stop blaming each other.

The theme of this book is to do the right thing, even if it seems scary. This is a very important concept for children to learn because throughout life they will make mistakes and they need to know that they are held accountable for their actions. The plot in this story is relatable because children have undoubtably broken rules at home. The illustrations were colorful and engaging.
I just adored this book. I loved the illustration. I love the straight forward and realistic ending to the story. I loved the lesson about the "right place" being home. I especially loved the mama bear. Fanciful and practical all together.
This was a sweet story of 3 bears trying to replace a broken seashell. Their journey is not without its ups and downs but it all works out in the end. The story was lovely, and the illustrations perfectly matched. However, it is a bit long for story time.
Stunning illustrations, especially the facial expressions of the bears, and a good story with a subtle message about responsibility.
Three Bears in a Boat is about three bears named Dash, Charlie and Theo on their adventure to finding their mom a new blue seashell after they accidentally broke hers. They decide to go out to sea to find her a new blue sea shell, but didn't have any luck. The three bears begin to argue putting the blame on one another, get distracted and end up floating into a terrible storm. Luckily, the storm pushes them back home where they finally find the blue shell they were looking for. They apologize to their mom and present her with the new shell. This story teaches a lesson of taking responsibility for your actions rather than put the blame on someone else. In the classroom, we can discuss alternate ways the three bears could have solved the show more problem. show less
