This is an important if uncomfortable book. What is the progressive response to free speech in collaborative terms of Occupation? Should Celine have been shot? These are whimsical questions in lieu of a concerted response. I think the procedural response to the Brasillach affair deserves attention.

Brasillach did not share in that popular joy. - Last words
- (Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)Was Bracillach guilty? Yes. Should he have been shot? No. In 1945, it was Brasillach's fascist vision hat France hoped to destroy along with the man. Today, the myth of a martyred, innocent Brasillach gives sustenance to the extreme right. We can say with hindsight that this myth would not exist if Brasillach had not been put to death; that is the price exacted by de Gaulle's exemplary gesture of February 6, 1945.
