This book genuinely made me laugh. The greatest aspect of this book is the concept of the illustrations within the book "disappearing" into the spine of the book. It requires the reader to tilt and shake the book to free the characters within the spine, all while showing how the structure of a book can be manipulated. The illustrations are quirky, colorful, and almost drawn in a sort of "Harold and the Magic Crayon" way, which lends to the fantastical nature of the book. The overall message is that you should always proceed with caution when reading--you never know what you will encounter!
Playful metafiction where the characters interact with the gutter between pages in the book in fun and twisty ways and ask the reader for assistance.
I thought this book was very funny and clever! I was immediately drawn to the bright orange cover and the large font. All of the illustrations in the book were colorful and large as well, which made it fun to read. There were also short sentences on each page, which kept me entertained and interested to see what was going to come next. The story was about a girl named Bella who was walking her dog, and when the dog walked into the crease of the book he disappeared! Bella called for help, but everything and everyone that tried to go help also go sucked into the story. Eventually, Bella went in herself and tried to save all of them. My favorite part of the book was when she sent out a note to the reader telling them to: "put the book on show more its side and shake it". It was cool because the font and illustrations changed to be vertical to show the reader which way to hold the book. Once the reader shook the book, all of the characters came flying out! I thought this was very clever, new, and interesting concept to a book. I would definitely recommend it to someone, as well as read it to my classroom. show less
This book was absolutely adorable! As an adult I had a good time reading it and I can just imagine how much fun younger children would have with this book! Bella is walking her dog when the spine of the book eats her dog and all of the people who come to try to rescue her! Later on after the book eats everyone Bella inches closer to the spine and seems to get eaten too! The reader then is asked to shake the book and wiggle it, then all of the characters reappear!! This is a great book for younger kids to guess and predict where the characters in the book have gone and how they will be able to come back into the story.
Very fun for storytime! A little girl is walking her dog when a strange thing happens...the dog disappears (into the gutter of the book). Her friend Ben investigates - and he disappears too! The trick? Turn and shake the book to get everyone out. Fun and interactive.

A little meta, but this book made me chuckle. It made me think of Bark George with a silly twist. Enjoy.
The title may have a dog in it, but the part for the dog could have been filled in by a wagon the child pulled along. Cute book, would be very fun to read with a young child.

In the book the dog, and then her friend Ben, then several trucks get pulled into the fold in the book until even Bella gets pulled in. She manages to throw a note out -

Dear reader,

Please turn this book on its side and SHAKE...
