Description

Forced from her downtown Manhattan apartment by the terrorist attack of September 11, journalist Wendy Bounds was delivered to Guinan's doorstep -- a legendary Irish drinking hole and country store nestled along the banks of the Hudson River in the small town of Garrison, New York -- by a friend.Captivated by the bar's charismatic but ailing owner and his charming, motley clientele, Bounds uprooted herself permanently and moved to tiny Garrison, the picturesque river town they all call home. show more There she became one of the rare female regulars at the old pub and was quickly swept up into its rhythm, heartbeat, and grand history -- as related by Jim Guinan himself, the stubborn high priest of this little chapel. Surrounded by a crew of endearing, delightfully colorful characters who were now her neighbors and friends, she slowly finds her own way home.Beautifully written, deeply personal, and brilliantly insightful, Little Chapel on the River is a love story about a place -- and the people who bring it to life. show less

The author and her girlfriend have to leave their apartment after 9/11. They go in search of a place to live and come across this small burg of Garrsion on the Hudson across from West Point. They find themselves in Guinans bar and general store. This is the place they will stay. This book is small vingettes from this small town and particularly this bar. It is about making a home where you feel welcome and comfortable and making the most out of what is there. A quick, easy read, but well worth it. Very enjoyable.
A reminder to treasure the venues that make a town a community even if they are rough around the edges or down at the heels! Reminded me a little of some of the love that people have for the characters and small town drama of Niles, except I am ashamed to say, I think we are a little more cynical here!
The story of an Irish bar and the people who loved it. A paean to Guidian's Pub/General Store in Garrison, NY, just across the river from West Point. An enjoyable read
rabck from HI77; after the 9/11 attacks, the author found herself in Garrison, NY when she couldn't move back to her apartment. She finds a small town, complete with a grocery & Irish small bar, with it's local flavor and characters. It was a nice change from the helter-skelter existence of NYC, so the author chose to put down roots here.
